Business & Farms

Solar, batteries and EV charging for businesses and farms in Scotland

Quick answer

Can a Scottish business or farm run on its own solar power?

We design solar panels, battery storage and EV charging for businesses, farms and rural properties across Scotland. A survey looks at your roof or land, when your site uses electricity, and your grid connection. You then get one written quotation, with installation carried out through MCS-certified partners and network approval handled for you.

What we do

Four ways we help businesses and farms

Every site is different, so every design starts with a survey. These are the four areas we work in, and what each one involves.

Commercial solar

Offices, workshops, shops and industrial units tend to use most of their electricity during working hours, which is when solar panels generate. That makes a commercial roof one of the best places for solar: more of what the panels produce is used on site rather than exported.

The survey checks the roof structure and covering, the orientation and shading, and the capacity of your incoming supply. Flat roofs, pitched roofs and ground-mounted arrays on spare land are all possible, depending on the site.

Commercial battery storage

A battery stores solar generation that the site does not need at the time, and releases it when demand rises, such as early mornings, evenings or busy shifts. It can also charge from the grid at off-peak rates where your tariff allows it.

Batteries are sized to the way your site actually uses electricity. We look at your half-hourly data where it is available, so the design is based on your own pattern of use rather than a rule of thumb.

Farm solar

Farms often have large shed and barn roofs, steady daytime demand from dairies, grain drying, workshops and cold stores, and space for ground-mounted panels. Solar can be designed around the working pattern of the farm, from milking times to harvest.

We take care to place equipment where it will not get in the way of machinery or livestock, and we plan cable routes and inverter locations around the yard and buildings.

Rural properties

Rural homes, holiday lets, estates and steadings are often a long way down the line from the nearest substation, and many rely on oil, LPG or electric heating. Solar and a battery can reduce reliance on the grid and give some resilience when the supply is weak.

Many rural properties are in SSEN territory in the north, Highlands and Islands, where network capacity can be limited. We check what the network will allow before the design is finalised.

How a business project runs

It starts with a conversation about the site, how it uses electricity and what you want to achieve. A surveyor then visits to look at the roofs or land, the electrical installation and the incoming supply.

From that we prepare a design and a written quotation. Larger systems need approval from SP Energy Networks or SSEN before they are connected, and we prepare and submit that application for you. If the network sets limits on export, the design is adjusted to suit.

Installation is planned around your working day, so that power-offs and access for equipment cause as little disruption as possible. We install through MCS-certified partners, and you receive the commissioning paperwork and certificates at handover. Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status.

What helps us prepare your quotation

A recent electricity bill, and half-hourly usage data if your supplier provides it, tells us when the site uses electricity. Photos of the roofs, the fuse boards and the meter position help the surveyor plan the visit.

If you run vehicles, tell us how many, where they park and when they are on site. EV chargers for staff, visitors or a fleet can be designed into the same system and scheduled around solar generation and your tariff.

What size of business can you help?

We work with farms, rural estates, small commercial units, workshops and offices across Scotland. The survey looks at your roof or land, your daytime electricity use and your grid connection before any design is proposed.

Can solar panels go on agricultural buildings?

Many farm buildings, such as sheds, barns and steadings, have large roofs that suit solar panels. The surveyor checks the roof structure, orientation and shading, and whether the way the building is used affects where equipment can go.

Does a business installation need network operator approval?

Yes. Larger systems need approval from SP Energy Networks or SSEN before they are connected. We prepare and submit the application as part of the project, and the design is adjusted if the network sets limits on export.

What does a commercial battery do?

A battery stores solar generation or off-peak electricity and releases it when the site needs it most. For businesses with heavy morning or evening demand, it moves more of that use onto stored electricity instead of peak-rate grid power.

Is finance available for business installations?

Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. Your quotation sets out the full price and, if you want it, the finance option alongside it.
