Getting a home EV charger installed in Scotland

Quick answer

What happens when a home EV charger is installed?

A home EV charger installation starts with a survey of your parking, fuse board and cable route. The charger is then wall-mounted, wired on its own dedicated circuit and tested. Your installer notifies SP Energy Networks or SSEN, depending on your postcode. Installation is subject to survey and network operator approval.

The survey

Before anything is fitted, a surveyor checks where you park, where the charger can be mounted, and the route a cable would take from your fuse board. They also check that your supply and fuse board can take a dedicated charging circuit safely.

If anything needs upgrading first, such as an older fuse board, it is written into your quotation so there are no surprises on the day.

Installation day

The installer mounts the charger, runs the cable, fits a dedicated circuit with the right protection and connects everything up. They then test the circuit, commission the charger, and show you how the app and charging schedule work.

Most homes need nothing more than a tidy cable run and a short power-off while the new circuit is connected.

Network approval and paperwork

Every home charger in Scotland has to be notified to the local network operator: SP Energy Networks in central and southern Scotland, and SSEN in the north, Highlands and Islands. Your installer handles that notification for you.

Once the job is signed off you receive the electrical certificate and the commissioning paperwork, which you will want to keep with your house documents.

We install through MCS-certified partners across Scotland. Your postcode decides whether SP Energy Networks or SSEN is your network operator, and the network approval is handled as part of the process.

What does a home EV charger installation involve?

A surveyor checks your parking, your fuse board capacity and the cable route. The charger is mounted, wired into a dedicated circuit and commissioned. The work usually takes part of a day, subject to survey and network operator approval.

Do I need permission from my network operator?

Yes. In Scotland, SP Energy Networks covers central and southern Scotland and SSEN covers the north, Highlands and Islands. Your installer handles the notification, and most home installations are standard.

Can I install an EV charger if I do not have off-street parking?

No. A home charger needs off-street parking so the cable reaches the car safely without crossing a pavement. If you park on the street, you will need to rely on public charging instead.

What should I look for in an EV charger?

Look for a charger that supports scheduled charging, works with solar and battery systems, and meets current UK smart charging rules. A smart charger can charge at the cheapest overnight rate and use surplus solar automatically.

How long does installation take after I order?

It depends on survey availability and how quickly the network operator responds. We give you a date once the survey is done, and the work on site is usually completed in a single visit.
