Frequently asked questions about solar, batteries and EV charging

Quick answer

What do most people ask before going ahead?

Most questions come down to three things: whether your roof and parking suit the system, how a battery and an overnight tariff work together, and who carries out the work. The answers below cover each one in plain terms. If your question is not here, call 0141 230 0198 and we will talk it through.

How to use these answers

The answers here are general and apply across Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands and Islands. Your own survey turns them into specifics for your house: how many panels fit, what size of battery makes sense, and where the charger goes.

If something here does not match your situation, that is exactly what the survey is for. Bring your questions and the surveyor will answer them on site.

Is charging an EV at home cheaper than public charging?

Home charging on an overnight time-of-use tariff is usually much cheaper than rapid public charging. The exact cost per mile depends on your tariff and your car, so we show the assumptions in your quotation rather than quoting a standard figure.

Do I need a battery to make solar worthwhile in Scotland?

A battery lets you use your solar generation in the evening instead of exporting it cheaply. It also lets you buy electricity at an overnight rate and use it during the day, which gets more value from the whole system.

Can I charge my EV from solar panels?

Yes. On sunny days surplus solar can charge the car directly. A battery helps by storing excess generation for the car to draw on later, so less is exported for a low rate.

Who is my network operator in Scotland?

SP Energy Networks covers central and southern Scotland. SSEN covers the north, Highlands and Islands. Your postcode decides which one applies to your installation.

How long does installation take?

A typical solar and battery installation takes one to two days on site. The survey and network approval happen beforehand. Charge point installation is subject to survey and network operator approval.

Is finance available?

Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. Your quotation sets out the full price, and the finance option alongside it if you want it.

What warranty do I get on a solar and battery system?

We install through MCS-certified partners. Ask whether your guarantee is insurance-backed and whether it survives if the company ceases trading. The installer named on your MCS certificate is the company doing the work.

Will an EV increase my electricity bill?

Charging a car at home adds to your electricity use. That extra demand is why pairing solar and a battery with an overnight tariff matters: more of the house and car use is covered by cheaper or self-generated electricity.
